Should I Replace or Repair my Fence?

A fence is more than just an aesthetic part of your home; it also provides security, privacy, and outlines your property boundaries. So when you have a fence post or panel that starts to show signs of weathering or aging, it can be a difficult decision on whether you should replace the entire fence, just a section, or try and have it repaired. Luckily for you, our fence experts have the knowledge and expertise to guide you in the best direction. We always advise our clients based on what is best for them. Our advice is based on years of knowledge and experience. Here are some of the items we look at when trying to decide between repair and replacement:

Cost-Effective Option:

  • If the damage is minor and isolated, repairing the fence may be a more cost-effective solution compared to a full replacement.
  • Repairing specific sections, such as fixing a few broken boards or reinforcing weak posts, can save money in the short term.
  • If the damage is extensive, widespread, or structural, a replacement may be more practical and cost-effective in the long run.

Time and Labor:

  • Fence repair is often quicker than a complete replacement, allowing you to address issues promptly.
  • Repairs generally offer minimal disruption to your property, as they typically target specific problem areas.
  • Upgrading to more durable materials can enhance the longevity of the fence and reduce future maintenance costs.

Preserving Aesthetics:

  • If the existing fence has sentimental or aesthetic value, repairing it can help maintain the original character of your property.
  • If the existing fence no longer captures the overall aesthetic feel of the property, replacing it could be a better option.
  • An impeccably kept and visually attractive fence enhances the overall visual appeal of your property.

Fence Post Repairs

Fence posts are the vertical beams that are buried in the ground at specific intervals. The posts are the main supports for the fence panels. When a fence post fails or needs repair, you’ll be able to see the damage right away. A failing or broken post usually lets one entire section of a fence either sag or fall down completely. Here in East Texas, the most common type of fence post repair is on wood panel privacy fences that were installed 10 or more years ago.

Back then, it was common practice to build these types of fences with 4″x4″ wood posts. Since the post is made of wood and buried in the ground, it tends to weather quickly and suffer from rotting and termites. Today, we recommend replacing these fence posts with round galvanized steel posts. Once seated and installed correctly, galvanized fence posts last decades, if not longer. Generally, galvanized posts require minimal maintenance unless they incur damage from robust winds or storms.

While wooden fence posts are the most common type of repair that we make, we can repair any type of fence post, regardless of the material. Longview Fence Company is well-versed in both residential and commercial fence post repairs. We can assist with chain-link posts, composite material posts like vinyl, wrought iron and more.

Gate and Fence Repair

Fence panels or sections serve as integral components of a fence, shaping the visual appeal, privacy, and security of your property. As time passes, these panels will undergo wear and tear, weather-related impacts, or damage. If the fence is in good enough condition, choosing to have it repaired may be the best option and the best way to ensure its longevity.

Taking care of any issues with your fence quickly will not only maintain the security and privacy of your property, but it can also help save on future repairs. Regular maintenance is a vital part of any fence. By continuing to maintain your fence, you can put off expensive replacements in favor of less expensive repairs.
